On August 10th, 2020, Cedar Rapids was hit by a devastating thunderstorm called a derecho. The 100+ mph winds ravaged the city, damaging virtually every structure and destroying nearly 70% of the tree canopy. Kennedy High School was hit hard, resulting in the school being closed until January 19th. Damage included the total loss of the truck and trailer used to support the talented students of the Kennedy High School bands and show choirs.
The staff, students, and parents of the Kennedy community are resilient! We know “the show must go on” and have been working hard to create performance opportunities for our students in the most challenging circumstances. Now, as we look forward to the years ahead, and to the normal hustle and bustle of a busy fine arts department, we are asking for your support with “The Show Must Go On!” campaign to raise funds to replace the truck and trailer for the Kennedy Performing Arts program.
The truck and trailer will be used extensively by the band and choir programs to transport vital equipment, instruments, costumes, and other materials to football games, marching band and show choir competitions, and other performances around the country. This equipment will allow us to continue to showcase the amazing talents of our students for audiences near and far.
The amount needed for a used truck and a new trailer that will proudly display “Kennedy High School Performing Arts” is $59,200. We will receive $13,274 in insurance payments. We are asking for your help to cover the $45,926 shortfall. Donations are tax-deductible and eligible for corporate matching. Please know that your contribution is a clear message to current and future students: “The Show Must Go On!”
